Leaking Democracy: Roe's Overturn and Political Participation (with Flavia Cavallini and Alessandra Moresi)
This study examines the effect of the overturning of Roe v. Wade on women’s willingness to run for office, focusing on U.S. House primaries. Exploiting the random timing of the leak of the decision and its interplay with the timing of primary filing deadlines across states, and using official primary candidate lists, we document a significant average decline in the probability that a woman competes in primary races. These findings suggest that the leak, and the anticipated reversal of Roe v. Wade, decreased women’s political participation in federal races, despite the broader mobilization it generated in other domains of political behaviour.
