Postdoctoral Fellow in Digital Regulation : Regulating Emerging Techs

General description

The Governance and Regulation Chair at the University Paris-Dauphine|PSL has one post-doctoral opening in political-economy / regulation of the digital industry. The post-doctoral fellow will be working with a group of researchers specialized in the economic, political, and legal analyses of the digital transformation. The position is funded in the framework of a research partnership with one of the main players in the digital industry seeking to explore the regulatory challenges raised by the development of the metaverse; understood as the set of technologies and related services developing and exploiting the opportunities raised by immersive technologies. The metaverse relies on a combination of new interfaces supporting virtual or augmented reality and renewed infrastructure technologies embedded in the network (protocols, platforms, architecture) supporting new types of digital services. Potential applications cover entertainment and gaming, social-medias, distribution channels and service provision, education and training, work processes, etc.

The research-program aims at better understanding the technological, legal, and societal issues that are emerging — or are likely to emerge — as the metaverse/Web 3.0 develops, to identify and anticipate potential necessary actions in terms of public policies and regulation (including self-regulation). It will be based on an analysis of the various business models and service designs associated to the metaverse as well as on the current set of regulations currently developed in the context of the European Union to shape the development of the digital economy. It will address the following set of issues: (1) Privacy, identity; (2) Virtual objects/environment status, property rights regimes; (3) Safety and risks; (4) Interoperability, portability, openness, and competition.

The successful candidate must have a solid background either in economics and management, or in political economy and technology and society studies especially in one or several of the following fields: digital business models, platform economics, digital governance and regulation, digital communication and medias, innovation studies. The candidate should be willing to apply his/her expertise to regulatory issues. A strong interest for and knowledge on emerging technologies would be a plus. The candidate should also demonstrate a solid expertise in applied research and should be interested in deriving policy/strategy recommendations from his/her research.

The successful candidate will work with other researchers from different disciplines and with industrial and policy partners. A taste for teamwork and an interest in collaborating with practitioners are essential.

The Governance and Regulation Chair is a research program involving the University Paris-Dauphine | PSL— a leading University in Economics and Management in France —, businesses, and regulatory agencies. Its working program covers the political economy and institutional organization of regulation, and the challenges raised by the digital and environmental transitions for the governance of industries and markets. Contract

In line with French standards, the Post-Doctoral Researcher will be paid 29k€ net/year (subject to adjustments based on experience and family context), which includes social coverages.

The successful candidate will be offered a 12-month fixed-term contract, extendable up to 2 years.

Starting Month: Flexible, from December 2022 to February 2023

PROFILE

  • Ph.D. in Economics, Management, Political Science or Technology and Society Studies with a significant focus on digital governance and regulation issues.
  • Linguistic skills: The working language of the multi-cultural team is English. Fluency in oral and in written English is a must. French is not mandatory but will be considered as an advantage.
