When digital meets nuclear

Roundtable Chair Debate

In some countries, data centres already consume more electricity than households. In Ireland, for example, data centres consume more electricity than urban households. By 2028, with the emergence of generative AI, the electricity consumption of Irish DCs will exceed that of all the country's households. According to the European Commission, DC electricity consumption in the EU will increase by 28% between now and 2030, reaching 98.5 TWh.

What can be done to meet the challenge of this increase in consumption without any major impact on the climate, even though the players involved have made some very ambitious commitments in their climate roadmap? Progress in energy efficiency, the recycling of waste heat and the use of renewable energies will undoubtedly not be enough to limit CO2 emissions.

That's why players are turning to nuclear energy. In a highly symbolic move, Microsoft wants to revive the Three Miles Island power station in the USA to power its DCs with nuclear energy. Other players have expressed an interest in small modular reactors (SMRs).

So France, with its largely carbon-free electricity, has a card to play. To talk about this, we have invited three guests to our breakfast debate:

  • Adrien Haidar, consultant, Frontier Economics
  • Emmanuel Tuchscherer, Head of Public Policy, Amazon

This debate will be moderated by Christine Le Bihan-Graf, partner, Hogan Lovells.
