Creation: second half of 2020.
Group leader: Vladimir Avetian
Composition: Researchers, post-doctoral and doctoral students from the Chair and other academic institutions; experts from French and European public institutions (on a more occasional basis).
Theme: This working group is interested in the relationships between public and political institutions, civil society and the market, and studies them through the prism of tools and concepts specific to political economy, the economics of institutions and the economics of law.
Particular emphasis is placed on the collection and exploitation of original data. The work is structured around a variety of research projects, such as: the export of administrative or historical archives enabling the regulation of industry and markets and its consequences to be studied over a long period; the analysis of interactions between political and economic institutions; the behaviour of elected representatives and the implications for public policy; the making of European policies through the prism of a detailed study of the legislative process and public consultations; and the comparison of regulatory practices and the status of regulators between OECD countries.
With a strong empirical emphasis, the work developed and analysed is discussed by social science researchers (with an emphasis on economics, but also the regular presence of political scientists and lawyers) and data science specialists. They aim to explain the dynamics at work in the construction of governance frameworks for industries and markets, and to analyse their economic and social consequences.
Work organisation: Weekly sessions.
Topics covered in 2023:
- Governance and regulatory regimes within the OECD
- European consultations
- The political consequences of the COVID 19 crisis
- Regulation of the economy by the Board of Trade in the 18th century
Results: Identification and development of research projects, new collaborations and partnerships with researchers or external organisations (ARCOM, OECD, DITP) based on consolidated skills in textual data analysis in conjunction with the ACSS-PSL Institute (see below).
