Papier: Navigating Change: Google Maps, Real-Time Information, and Transit Ridership
Abstract: We show that when Google Maps incorporated real-time transit tracking information, public transit ridership in the United States increased, particularly on subways. Ridership per capita was 12% larger 3 years after the staggered rollout of real-time data - an effect similar to much costlier interventions like free transit. Real-time data in proprietary agency applications have much smaller impacts compared to Google. Survey data confirms that commuters reduced car trips and opted for transit following the rollout. We see suggestive evidence that air quality improved and estimate that travelers are willing-to-pay around $0.70 per trip for the enhancement from Google Maps.
